A GAME, THREE OBJECTIVES

The language used in sailing is far from the everyday language. To memorize each one of the marine concepts is an already arduous task as to complicate in excess the game. Therefore, The World of Yachts doesn't seek to be a game for sailing experts but to give to know and to popularize this sport without leaving aside certain basic technical terms that will make enjoy the experts of the sea.

The World of Yachts pursues three basic objectives: the first one is the one of transmitting the players the emotion lived when participating in a yacht, the competitive strategies of each one of the patterns, the discharge of adrenaline that takes place when putting all the senses in the competition. It is the part of the game in itself.

The second objective is to popularize the sailing, to give to know its basic concepts: the parts of a ship, the courses, the winds, the maneuvers, etc. that compose one of the educational parts of the game. The other educational part and the third objective of The World of Yachts is the one of promoting and to give knowing of the city headquarters of the thirtieth second edition of the American Cup in Valencia.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Regatta. There are different varieties of regatta involving more or less laps of a marine circuit delimited by buoys; this game has chosen one of the better known varieties, the Olympic slalom, consisting of sailing wind wards, then leeward at 90º, next a length leeward at 135º, then windward again, followed by the wind in the stern and finally windward, ending at the finishing line.

Wind. The wind can blow in different directions and the position of the buoys in the regatta depends on its direction. The wind has a different name depending on where it comes from. Normally the direction of the wind does not change during a regatta, although on certain occasions this does happen and this means that the buoys must be changed and a new route traced. This would be done by the organizers of the regatta and the participating sailboats would have to modify their course and strategy depending on the new coordinates, but without stopping the regatta.

The committee boat. In a regatta the starting line is marked by an imaginary line drawn between the first buoy and the committee boat, which cannot be crossed until the starting horn is blown. At that moment the participating sailing ships choose a course and the regatta begins. When the regatta is coming to an end, at the last windward turn of the sailing ships, the committee boat removes itself to the second buoy in order to mark the finish with another imaginary line.

Sailing windward. To sail windward means sailing towards where the wind comes from and is a closed route. Although it may seem impossible, it is possible thanks to the position of the sails and the direction of the hull. It means placing the bow of the ship (the front part) at more than 45º on the starboard (right) or on the port side (left) to where the wind comes from , since if we chose to enter within these 45º the mainsail would flap like a flag(flutter or wave) and the ship would finally come to t standstill.

Leeward cross. We sail crossways when we receive the wind at an angle of 90º in relation to the bearing of the ship marked by the bow (the front part) of the ship. It is a very fast course, the best way of achieving a high speed. It is a leeward course, that is to say with the wind in favour and a carrying bearing or open to the wind.

Leeward length. Sailing lengthways happens when we receive the wind on the wing of the boat (the rear lateral part), at an angle of approximately 135º, in relation to the bearing of the ship, marked by the bow (the front part). It is a leeward course, that is to say, in favour of the wind and a carrying bearing or open to the wind.

With the wind in the stern. Sailing with the wind in the stern, happens when we sail in the same direction as the wind. In this situation we can hang the mainsail from either side of the boat. It is a leeward course, that is to say in favour of the wind, and a carrying course or open to the wind.
